There has been a great deal of talk of late about the kingdom of God. From a theologian such as N.T. Wright to a pastor (I use that term loosely) such as Brian Mclaren — even Bono of U2 is getting in on it — there seems to be rather hyperactive focus on the kingdom of God. And while we should recognize that Jesus did include the statement in the Lord’s prayer, “Thy kingdom come”, we must recognize that the primary means of the kingdom coming at this time is through the converts that are brought into the kingdom. Even so, the real issue here is the motive on the part of those pushing the kingdom theology. It would seem that what they are really doing is elevating the kingdom over the King. They seem to love the kingdom more than the actual King. And that is idolatry.
